GUIDELINES

After signing up, advisers will need to complete our mandatory training programme before taking on any cases as an adviser for Telmi. Thus will ensure the quality of the service.

Practical Guidance

Many Telmi’s advisers will be jurists, lawyers, or those who have experience in providing legal support. They will provide knowledge and advice to those living in the Aegean Islands, as well as assessing past cases supported by other advisers on the platform.

We will ensure the advice given by our Advisers is of the highest standard through using the following measures:

  • Administrators can review a case on request by the Adviser or at their own initiative;

  • Telmi administrators will contact the individual advisers frequently to ensure communication and guidance is always clearly understood;

  • Advisers must complete a minimum of 12 Continuing Professional Development courses totalling 20 hours each year. These courses will consist of online learning that aims to further their own self-development and increase their professionalism, and also contains courses that will update them on substantive matters like changes in the law.

Telmi offers an invaluable resource for advisers. Advisers will have access to a database of information needed to help asylum seekers know their rights and prepare for their asylum interview. The database will include previous decisions made by asylum caseworkers, so advisers will be able to use past decisions to understand the asylum process, saving time and streamlining the entire process. This, in turn, provides better and more accurate advice for the clients, reduces volunteer burnout, and will act as a historical and independent  check against arbitrary decisions by asylum caseworkers

Telmi will take all reasonable steps to ensure advisers, interpreters and asylum seekers are safe online. Asylum is a live political issue in Greece and beyond, and as a result there is an inherent security risk  related to the platform and, more importantly, to the data of advisers and clients.

Telmi has developed the following resources to ensure our advisers are able to provide the best support possible:

  • A handbook which provides information for advisers about how to support applicants preparing for their asylum interview;

  • A team of Administrators at Telmi who will be overseeing the work of the advisers, who can be contacted for further individual support

  • A continuous professional development programme will be provided for the advisers so they remain up-to-date with the latest changes in immigration policies, best practices to maintain privacy and confidentiality procedures through online training on Telmi’s website;

  • Updates from Telmi about changes in Greek law

  • Telmi hopes to develop partnerships with lawyers that work on the ground in Greece to remain up-to-date with the current practices of asylum caseworkers conducting the interviews; and

  • Advisers are required to sign and commit themselves to an Advisers code which sets out the stringent ethical and professional standards that are expected from Telmi advisers

  • Advisers will be monitored to ensure quality and compliance with Telmi’s policies.
