In 2020,
Europe has accepted that
50,000
asylum seekers are living
in camps on the Aegean Islands.

What issues does Telmi solve?
FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS
'You arrive and it's NO DIFFERENT from your own country.
Whether support is remote or in person, we need help.'
There is both (1) a lack of information to asylum seekers on the procedures and (2) very few legal advisers on the ground.
Telmi provides (1) free and up-to-date access to reliable information on the asylum process as well as (2) contact with remote legal advisers.
FOR ADVISERS
'I've often thought about going back to volunteer on Lesvos.
But what can I really do in two weeks?'
Most legal organisations in the Aegean islands run with limited continuous presence. Professionals volunteering in the field are often limited to short stays due to financial, professional or personal commitments. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated this difficulty in providing consistent legal assistance as foreign volunteers face difficulties travelling to the islands, as well as accessing residents in the camps to provide their services.
Telmi allows advisers to support individuals remotely in preparation for their asylum interview. Assisting remotely means that advisers’ can offer support in line with their schedules.
FOR INTERPRETERS
'Interpreters are usually refugees. They aren't qualified and Clients aren't open to talking about their suffering members of their suffering to members of their own community.'
Communication can act as a huge barrier to asylum seekers understanding the asylum process as the number of interpreters available on the ground is limited.
On the Islands, fellow camp residents often assume the role of interpreter, despite often having limited language skills themselves and no specific training.
Telmi provides a reliable system of interpretation through a multilingual platform with trained interpreters. Additionally, Telmi enables this process to be done remotely which allows neutral, skilled, third party interpretation.
FOR HOST STATES
'The migrant flows exceed the capacity of our state infrastructure.'
Asylum services are not prepared for the extremely high demand for individuals seeking asylum. This leads to overcrowded camps.
Telmi eases the process by providing a clear and fast case management system, thus speeding up the process for the asylum services. Therefore, Telmi solves the challenge of overcrowded camps and tensions between asylum seekers and the host society.
